Logitech Z906 5.1 is a well rounded sound system around. It is capable of producing 1000W at maximum power, and can decode Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks as you expect. It is intended to be used as the heart of a home movie system and with a central command console. However, [zarpli] Has revealed the serial secret of the device and can now operate the device in a unique way.
As it turns out, the Z906 uses a main control console that communicates with the rest of the hardware via a DE15 connector (also known as DB-15). [zarpli] Understand that hardware can be guided by any device with a serial port instead. Thus, a library was created that could easily be used with an Arduino to control all the major functions of the Z906. Everything from volume level to effect mode and channel assignment can be guided by microcontroller. In conclusion, [zarpli] Shows hardware playing a multi-channel composition without the console attached, instead running its own hardware.
If you have a Logitech Z906 or similar unit that you would like to automate, you may find this useful. This is also a good inspiration to consider hacking into other hardware console ports. Video after the break.
