Apple launched Studio Display in March 2022, but it may not be the only new display from Cupertino this year – we may also see an update to Apple’s Pro Display XDR.
The new version of the Pro Display XDR is reported to have 7K resolution, an increase over the current 6K resolution offered by the 32-inch Pro display launched in December 2019.
The new screen will support the promotion and is expected to be equipped with an Apple chip.
New Pro Display XDR: Release Date
It looks like Apple will release this new monitor alongside the Mac Pro. We’ll see the new Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR at WWDC in June, but the release date is likely to be towards the end of the year – probably October 2022.
New Pro Display XDR: Price
The Apple Pro Display XDR is priced at £ 4,599 / $ 4,999 and is not even shipped with a stand (an extra £ 1,000 / $ 1,000 if you want a stand).
In a December 2021 Power On Newsletter, Mark Gurman hinted that the new monitor could be as ‘cheap’ as half the price of the company’s more premium monitors. Gurman’s Ballpark estimates therefore suggest a price of around £ 2,300 / $ 2,500. However, at the time its data could be related to the studio display, which we now know is priced at £ 1,499 / 1,599.
At the time, Gurman wrote: “A low-cost monitor, I think, would be a hot seller for those who want to add a big screen to their new MacBook Pro without having to spend the equivalent of a luxury car down payment on the Pro Display XDR,” Gurman wrote then. “Right now, the cost of making that monitor has probably come down, and with a few changes and perhaps a slight reduction in brightness, Apple might be able to get a monitor of almost the same quality (a little smaller). Half the price. “
New Pro Display XDR: Screen
The most important part of the display will be the screen. Here is what we want to see:
Size
It is possible that the new Pro display XDR may have a larger screen of 36 inches. This will allow Apple to increase the resolution to 7K without changing the pixel density.

Resolution
The upcoming Pro Display XDR is said to have a 7K resolution. Assuming it is at 32in which suggests a pixel density of up to 245 pixels per inch. This would be an increase from the current 218 pixels per inch. Alternatively Apple can increase the size of the display up to 36in as mentioned above.
Screen technology
The new monitor is expected to support promotion and is equipped with an Apple chip, something that will unlock a number of smart features.
The Studio display has an A13 chip with a neural engine, so the new Pro Display XDR will probably have the same chip – or maybe a new look that will serve as a graphics card for the display.
We don’t expect the Apple Pro display to increase the brightness and contrast ratio of the XDR. The XDR offers 1,600 net brightness, 1,000,000: 1 contrast ratio and a super-wide viewing angle.
