The 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro is coming soon, pre-orders will start from Friday and the model will be shipping from June 24. It is a significant product for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, this is the first Mac to ship with the M2 processor, so how it works will give us a first glimpse of how Apple plans to take the Mac processor line-up from generation to generation. It’s the only Mac laptop shipping without a MagSafe charger and the last to have a touch bar.
So while the 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro M2 is about to draw attention, it’s worth asking the question that was on everyone’s lips last week after it was announced: Why does this computer exist at all?
Theory 1: Reusable
Apple prefers recycling, not only when it uses recycled aluminum on its devices, but also when it exports center stage-like features from one product to another. Consider reusing the 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro.
This is the 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro. Hold on to the new version that Apple will release this month and you can’t tell the difference between the two.
Foundry
It’s literally the same as the 13-inch M1 Macbook Pro. The case has not changed. The ports are the same. The touch bar is the same. The only difference is the M2 inside, which is nothing – but that means Apple had to make minimal changes to its production line to get this new laptop out the door. (And since it’s built using older parts and hardware, that’s probably why it’s available this month, and the new M2 MacBook Air won’t follow until sometime in July.)
The longer a product lasts, the more profitable it is. As margins decrease, the company recovers its investment in the assembly line and the price remains the same. The 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro has some nice sweet margins. (And Apple may have made a lot of touch bars and nowhere else to sell them.) It would cost Apple a lot more to build a new 13-inch MacBook Pro with 14- and 16-inch models, and would be less profitable if Apple didn’t raise prices. Will be Which brings me to my next theory.
Theory 2: Marketing
The 13-inch MacBook Pro starts at 1,299. This hides a simple fact, a more complex one: new, high-end MacBook Pro models with mini-LED screens and MagSafe charging and fancy processors start at 1,999. The gap between the 13-inch model and the others is huge, and Apple wants to offer a laptop that can make MacBook Pro calls for less than $ 2,000.

If you think I’m saying something bad about the 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro, well, that’s where you’re right. But it does have some features that make it a good buy for a very specific clientele.
First, it’s got a cooling fan, and the M2 Air doesn’t have one In the M1 generation, it made almost no difference to normal operation – you really have to crank up the graphics processors and run them long enough to keep the chip hot enough to keep the air throttle coming back while chugging away. We don’t yet know how the M2 will run, but it is possible that for certain tasks requiring extended processor performance, the fan-cooled model will work better. (However, I would argue that if you plan to work at that level, you should Really If you can afford it, consider one of the more expensive MacBook professionals.)
According to Apple’s Space, the 13-inch MacBook Pro has a larger battery than the Air, so it can offer two hours of extra battery life. If battery life is your most important feature, the new 13-inch MacBook Pro makes sense.
Some people really love touch bars! This is obviously on the way out, but if you like the touch bar and don’t want to give it up, the 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro may be the fastest, most advanced computer to support it. Take it when you can.
Beyond that, though, I’m drawing a blank about why people would want to buy it. Have you got a death knell for the magnet? What if you don’t want a groove display? What if the prospect of a high-quality webcam fills you with fear of more zoom meetings in the future?
For all those people, this computer is for you. But I doubt that for the rest of us the computer will be shipped in July, MagSafe, a good camera, a full-height row function key, a good webcam, a smooth and modern design and a choice of four colors… and all for the same price or less. .
