Wondering which versions of macOS or Mac OS X can run your Mac? Our macOS compatibility tester will show you that Macs support different versions of macOS and Mac OS X so you can tell which macOS to run on your Mac.
Which Mac operating system can my Mac run?
Apple releases a new version of the Mac operating system almost every year, but it will not support every Mac. With more and more Macs falling by the wayside each year, the latest features can’t be updated to take advantage. Read on to find out which Macs are supported by each version of the Mac operating system
But that may not be the case with just asking if your Mac can run the new operating system. Some people want to know if it is possible to downgrade their Mac to an older version of macOS. In this case they may want to know what is the oldest macOS they can run.
Officially, the operating system that was available on that Mac at the time of your purchase is the oldest version of MacOS that can run on that Mac. It is likely that an older OS will not include the drivers required for your new Mac’s hardware. For this reason, it is unlikely that you will be able to install an older version of macOS on a new Mac – but you can see how to install older versions of macOS or OS X for guidance on what is possible. Or you can’t run older versions of macOS on M1 Macs.
We have here a complete list of different versions of macOS and Mac OS X.
Not sure which Mac you own? See our article on how to detect your Mac.

Note: In each case the year mentioned below is the year the Mac was launched – you bought a 2016 MacBook in early 2017 for example, but it is still a 2016 MacBook. This is important to keep in mind if you want to run older versions of macOS on Mac. Macs are generally incompatible with versions of MacOS that are older than shipping
